McKay Earns Runner-Up Finish to Lead Cards at Greater Louisville Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Tarah McKay earned another runner-up finish to lead the Louisville women's team at Saturday's Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park, while redshirt freshman Matt Hughes led the way for the Cardinal men. McKay, a native of St. Clements, Ont., covered the 5-kilometer course in a time of 17 minutes, 7.68 seconds to earn her second straight runner-up finish in the event, while Western Kentucky's Janet Jesang led the way in the field of 265 runners with a time of 16:52.95. McKay now has two wins and one runner-up finish in three events in 2008 and she's never finished worse than second in three career appearances at the Greater Louisville Classic. Hughes, a native of Oshawa, Ont., and transfer from Clemson University, covered the 8-kilometer course in a time of 24:21.36 to finish 14th overall in the field of 294 runners. Louisville junior Cory Thorne, running unattached, won Saturday's individual title with a time of 23:45.74 Overall, the Louisville men finished fourth with 127 points, while Southern Illinois won the men's title with 77 points. On the women's side, Texas led the way with 79 points, followed by Georgia State (198 points) and UAB (201 points), while the Cards were seventh with 238 points. "We're excited about our top runners, Matt Hughes and Tarah McKay," said Cards' head coach Brice Allen. "Matt is coming into his own right now and that was a strong finish for him and for Tarah, who continues to do a great job for us. We're going to build upon our finishes from today and continue to prepare for Pre-Nationals in two weeks." Also scoring points for the Louisville men was junior Scott McClain in 20th with a time of 24:34.56, followed by freshman Luke Lovelace in 31st at 24:44.01, junior Matt Smith in 33rd at 24:47.07 and freshman Chase Violet in 49th at 25:04.87.
Also scoring points for the Louisville women was sophomore Emily Borsare in 31st at 18:15.52, junior Kelsey Page in 40th at 18:26.11, junior Kathryn Long in 72nd at 18:46.64 and junior Kortni Dukes in 106th at 19:10.41. The Cards will have a week off from competition before competing at the Pre-Nationals on Oct. 18 in Terre Haute, Ind.
