Dukule Named to AVCA All-Northeast Region, Brown Named to Second Team

University of Louisville senior outside hitter Svetlana Dukule was named to the 2007 AVCA All-Northeast Region First Team. Lecia Brown, who led the nation in blocking, was named to the Second Team for the Cardinals. "Duke" was a 2007 first team All-BIG EAST selection and Louisville's top hitter this year. The 6-4 native of Riga, Latvia led the Cardinals in hitting at .342 with 350 kills and 102 total blocks and was named BIG EAST Player of the Week 11/5/07. "Duke" was an offensive force for the Cardinals as she had 17 matches with double digit kills with her notching a career-high 21 kills against Middle Tennessee in the NCAA. She had three matches with 18 kills (Tennessee Tech, Villanova and Cincinnati). In the BIG EAST Tournament, she had 16 kills against Syracuse with four blocks and 14 kills and three blocks against Notre Dame. She had six kills and two blocks against St. John's in the championship. Against Ohio, she had 15 kills and five blocks. She has 15 matches hitting .300 or higher. In non-conference play top performances came when she hit .583 against Eastern Kentucky. Her highest hitting percentage in a conference match was the .567 hitting performance against Cincinnati (18-1-30). She has the ability to go one-on-one with hitters and leads the team in solo blocks with 31. She had a career-high five solos against Middle. She had three solos against New Mexico State, UConn and Ohio. She averages .97 block per game to help U of L to be the leading blocking team in the nation. Brown, was a first team All-BIG EAST selection as well and led the nation in blocking with a 2.07 per game average. She too had her career-high in kills in the 2007 NCAA match with 17. In the BIG EAST Tournament, she had five kills, hit .571 and had five blocks against Syracuse. She had one kill and seven blocks against NDU. She had six kills and eight blocks against St. John's in the championship. She can also be an offensive threat as witnessed by her 13 kills against No. 11 Duke. She tied a school record with 12 block assists against Duke and had three solos against Cincinnati.
