PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Louisville freshman Lola Arslanbekova led all BIG
EAST players in points per set (6.29) and kills (41) last week and for
her efforts she was named both the Player and Freshman of the Week. The
outside hitter helped the Cardinals to a sweep of two conference
opponents which secured UofL the No. 4 seed in the 2009 BIG EAST
Championship, which is hosted by Louisville.
In the Cardinals final two games of the BIG EAST regular season, and
with tournament seeding implications on the line, Arslanbekova put
together a powerful homestand for the Cardinals. Against St. John's she
tallied a team-high 16 kills and added seven digs in straight-set match.
The freshman also tallied a service ace and a block versus the Red
Storm.
In the team's final conference game against Connecticut, Arslanbekova
registered her eighth match this season with 20 or more kills, putting
away 25 attempts. Her.429 hitting percentage helped the Cardinals to a
3-1 victory over the Huskies. She also assisted on the defensive end,
digging out eight balls while blocking two.
Louisville will face Syracuse in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST
Championship at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20. The Championship will be held
at the Kentucky Convention Center in Louisville, Ky.
