No. 11 ranked Volleyball Knocks Off Illini in Three
Sept. 9, 2005 The No. 11-ranked University of Louisville beat the University of Illinois 30-20, 30-28, 30-26 in UNLV Volleyball Classic. U of L improves to 5-0 and Illinois falls to 5-1. "Illinois is well-coached and a strong program. Anytime you manage to beat the Big Ten in volleyball it is a great win," said U of L coach Leonid Yelin. "This will help us in the postseason. In the first game, the Illini stayed close, until U of L went on a 6-3 run to b up 21-16 and force an Illini timeout. U of L stayed hot and outscored Illinois 8-4 down the stretch for the 30-20 win. In the second game, U of L built a 14-8 lead and Illinois coach Don Hardin used his first time out to regroup. The Illini emerged from the huddle and scored two straight points and then chipped away at the Louisville lead. Illinois pulled to within one at 27-26 on a kill by Rasa Virsilaite. Louisville ran off the final three points including the final kill by Jennifer Hoffman to take a 2-0 lead to the lockerroom. After the break, Illinois came out strong and built a 10-5 lead. U of L battled back to a 13-13 tie and retook the lead at 16-15 inducing an Illini timeout. Louisville couldn't shake U of I when the Illini pulled within two at 24-22 on a kill by Rachel Van Meter. Louisville got to game point at 29-24 but Illinois scored twice before falling 30-26. *Note* Due to a UNLV Stat computer error, no box score is currently available.
