LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's track and field program has signed one of the nation's best throwers in Patrice Gates.

Gates, a Carrollton, Ga. native, is currently ranked as the third best female in the nation in the hammer throw. She holds the best-ever mark for a high school sophomore.

In her high school career, Gates has won four state titles, holds two national records and is a three-time national champion runner-up.

Her personal bests include: 179'0 in the hammer throw; 47'2 in the shot put; 132'3 in the discus and 57'11 in the weight throw. She competes for Coach Miller at Villa Rica High School and Coach Mike Judge at Throw 1 Deep throws club. Gates also currently carries a 3.86 GPA. She plans to major in graphic design.

The major factors in her decision were the quality of the track and field program and having coaches that truly believe in her abilities.

Louisville Throwing Coach Dale Cowper is known for developing throwers to be able to max out their potential. His group was ranked number one in the nation in 2009. He currently coaches two of the best throwers in the NCAA, including a defending national champion.

Louisville Head Coach Ron Mann, Assistant Head Coach Brice Allen, Throwing Coach Dale Cowper, Sprints Coach Terry Winston and Recruiting Coordinator Christine Krellwitz have worked tirelessly to put together yet another stellar recruiting class at the University of Louisville this year.
