EUGENE, Ore. - University of Louisville freshman thrower Khadija Abdullah finished fourth in the shot put at the 2009 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at historic Hayward Field.

Abdullah's top mark of 48-09.50 (14.87m) came on her second attempt and was good enough for fourth overall out of 22 athletes in the competition. Anastasia Jelmini won the event unattached with a throw of 53-00 (16.15m). The top two athletes per individual event qualified for the USATF Pan American Junior Championships Team.

"I am extremely impressed with her effort," said U of L assistant coach Dale Cowper. "The result is not what we had hoped for but it was a very gutsy performance.

The Markham, Ill. native concluded her freshman collegiate year with a 20th place finish in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The BIG EAST runner-up in the shot put finished ninth at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships and had a personal best throw of 52-02 (15.90m) at the Texas Relays to win the event.
