NEW YORK -
Following day one of the 2010 BIG EAST Indoor Championships at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in New York City, the University of Louisville men's team leads while the women's team sits in second. The Cards won three event titles, picked up eight medals, set three school records, earned three NCAA automatic and two NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
"We had the ups and downs of a normal BIG EAST Conference Championship meet," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "The BIG EAST Conference is very competitive. It's going to be a great, exciting finish tomorrow."
The Cardinal men are in second with 45 points through five scored events. Notre Dame is in first-place with 46.5 points, while Syracuse will enter day two in third with 26 points. On the women's side, the Cards sit in second place with 38 points, trailing West Virginia who leads through six events with 42 points, while Syracuse is in third-place with 30 points.
Setting the tone for the Louisville men was senior Rudon Bastian who posted an NCAA automatic qualifying mark with a personal best leap of 25-10.00 (7.87m) to win the long jump. Bastian, who is from Nassau, Bahamas, won the title last year in 2009. U of L scored three others in the long jump as sophomore Wesley Smith took third with a jump of 24-05.75 (7.46m) and senior Tone Belt placed fourth with a leap of 24-05.50 (7.45m).
Junior Matt Bruce's personal best time of 14:02.37 earned him his first BIG EAST title in the 5,000-meter run and was an improvement upon his NCAA ranking, moving him into 18th place on the list. His time today helped solidify him as one of the best distance runners in the BIG EAST Conference.
Also earning a medal on Saturday was junior
Kyle Gann who broke his previous school record by clearing a height of 16-2.75 (4.95m) to take third.
Louisville advanced four athletes to Sunday's finals, including sophomore Jacques Caldwell and junior Tony Baffour who finished eighth and tenth with times of 22.06 and 22.10, respectively. Junior Chris Wolfe will race in the finals of the 800-meters after posting a time of 1:52.57. Junior Matt Hughes will look to join fellow junior and Canada native Matt Bruce by looking to win the mile run after placing third in the preliminary's with a personal best time of 4:09.95.
The Cardinal women were led by the Conference meet and school-record performance of D'Ana McCarty who placed first in the weight throw with a mark of 74-00.25 (22.56m). McCarty, an Indianapolis, Ind. native, eclipsed what would have been a meet-record throw by teammate Jere' Summers who threw 73-00.75 (22.35m) and improved her NCAA mark that currently is second in the nation behind McCarty. Both marks improved their NCAA automatic qualifying distances.
Seniors Rachel Gehret and Chiamaka Omenyinma also had medal-winning performances on day one as they finished tied for first and third in the long jump with leaps of 19-11.00 (6.07m) and 19-10.25 (6.05m), respectively.
The lady Cards will send three athletes into four of Sunday's finals after strong preliminary performances. Senior Saravia Richardson finished second in the 60-meter dash with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.43. She also will look to take the 200-meter title after finishing fifth with a time of 24.41.
Senior Theresa Lewis also qualified for Sunday's finals by placing fifth in the 60m-hurdles with a time of 8.48.
Rounding out the list of qualifiers was Senior Kat Alcorn who placed sixth in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:51.34.
Senior Lindsey Cook also earned points for the Cards with a personal best performance. Cook finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 59-11.75 (18.28m).
Also making noise for the lady Cards was the distance medley relay team. The team, made up of Emily Borsare, Shane Mullany-Banks, Kat Alcorn and Caitlin Cunningham; broke the previous school-record by over five seconds.
"We had some things that happened well and some things that did not happen so well," said Mann. "Everybody has those though and we will certainly come out fighting until the very end tomorrow."
The final day of competition at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships will begin Sunday at 8:00 a.m. ET, with the multi-events and is set to conclude at 3:05 p.m. ET, with the men's 4x400-meter relay. The Cardinals will have a weekend off to prepare for the Alex Wilson Invitational on March 5-6 in South Bend, Ind. The meet will mark U of L's last attempt to earn qualifying marks for the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships.
