Terry Winston won't refer to himself as a magician, but the work he's done in just two seasons with the sprints, hurdles and relays group has ceased to amaze. Heading into his third season with the University of Louisville track and field program, he also oversees the Cardinals' academics.

Last year, Winston's group exceeded expectations and was pivotal in the women's squad winning the 2011 indoor and outdoor conference titles. In the outdoor season, four different athletes qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. Over the course of the year, his group broke four school records, including the women's 4x400m relay mark that stood for five years.

In 2010, his first season with the Cardinals, Winston guided Saravia Richardson become the first female athlete in school history from the sprints group to earn a bid to the national championships, as she competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60m dash. At the conference level, she had a career-best second-place finish. During the outdoor season, he helped a pair of runners earn regional bids.

A veteran of the sport, Winston accumulated 14 years of coaching experience before his arrival in Louisville. Previously, he spent five years (2005-09) at Arizona State as a men's assistant coach. Winston became most known for his development of the men's sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams and transformation into one of the nation's best. His group became instrumental in helping the Sun Devils capture multiple goals and titles: the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championship, the 2008 NCAA West Region Championship, a runner-up finish at the Pac-10 Outdoor Championships in 2007 and 2008, earning their second straight Top-10 finish at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championship (5th) and back-to-back top-10 finishes at the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships (6th/8th).

Winston guided 11 Sun Devils to All-America honors, five to PAC-10 Outdoor titles, coached five Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) indoor champions, three school record holders, two NCAA Outdoor West Region champions and two Pac-10 Outdoor Championship High Point award winners (annually recognizes the efforts of one male and one female student-athlete for their performances at the conference's outdoor championship meet) during his tenure with the Sun Devils.

At Arizona State, Winston was an instant success. He coached the 4x400-meter relay team to a runner-up finish at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships with a school-record time 3:00.57. Additionally, his 4x100-meter relay team set the current NCAA dual meet record with a 38.71 mark. In 2008, at the indoor national championships, a pair of his quarter-milers earned All-America accolades (second- and eighth-place finishes), while his 4x400-meter relay team placed third to help secure the team title.

Prior to Arizona State, Winston was an assistant coach at Virginia Tech for three seasons (2002-05), where he oversaw the men's and women's sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers. In his time there, he coached three individual BIG EAST champions and seven school record holders.

In 2002, Winston was responsible for a pair of hurdlers that earned top-five finishes at the U.S. Championships. One of those was Brandi Smith, who finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles and was considered to have one of the best turnarounds in the event after not qualifying in it the previous year.

Winston arrived in Blacksburg, Va., after a four-year stint (1997-2001) as an assistant coach in charge of men's and women's sprints at Missouri State. Winston helped guide the women to one outdoor and three indoor and Missouri Valley Conference Championships and an All-America performance in the 4x400-meter relay. He also was responsible for the women securing three medals at the 1999 Central American and Caribbean Championships.

Prior to his stop in Springfield, Mo., Winston served two seasons (1996-97) as an assistant coach at Marshall, working with the men's and women's sprinters. In his final year with the Thundering Herd, the men captured the Southern Conference Championship. Individually, he had the privilege of coaching sprinter Randy Moss, an All-American and Fred Biletnikoff award winner for Marshall's football team, as well as a seven-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro.

An Alton, Ill., native, Winston earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from South Carolina in 1995. He was a three-year letterman for the Gamecocks' track and field team, finishing runner-up in the indoor 55-meter hurdles and outdoor 110-meter hurdles at the 1995 SEC Championships.
