No. 16 Softball Sweeps Providence 8-0 and 10-3 Sunday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The No. 16/19 University of Louisville softball team picked up its second consecutive BIG EAST Conference sweep Sunday when the host Cards defeated Providence 8-0 and 10-3 at Ulmer Stadium. "I was really pleased with the way our team came out and executed today," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "After a shaky outing on Friday, we talked some things over yesterday and the team came ready to play today." In game one, junior catcher Melissa Roth went 3 for 3 and scored three runs and junior pitcher Kristen Wadwell tossed a two-hit shutout as the Cards defeated the Friars 8-0 in six innings. Louisville took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Vanessa James reached on a two-out infield single and stole second. Melissa Roth followed with another infield single and stole second to place runners in scoring position. Kristin Austin's base hit up the middle plated James and Roth came home on a wild pitch. The Cards tacked on four more runs in the fourth. Patrika Barlow singled and scored on James' team-leading fifth triple of the season. James crossed the plate when Roth was safe on a bunt single. Austin followed with a single to centerfield came around to score on a Providence fielding error to make it a 6-0 game. Colby Wherry's two-run double in the sixth gave the Cardinals the 8-0 win. Roth singled and Chelsea Bemis and Wherry walked to load the bases for Wherry's two-out double to centerfield. Kristen Wadwell (27-5) notched her sixth complete game shutout of the season, scattering two hits and striking out seven in six innings. Roth led the Cards offensively, going 3 for 3 with three runs and an RBI. Austin and James each had two hits in the game.
PC starter Danielle Bertolette (4-10) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on three hits in 3.0 innings. In game two, the Cardinals scored 10 runs in the first three innings, led by Kassie Stanfill and Kristi Cunningham who combined for four runs and four RBI. Wadwell picked up her second win of the day in 4.0 innings of relief as she added to her nation-leading tally of 28 victories. The Cards utilized a walk and five hits to go up 3-0 in the first inning. Roth led off with a hit, Bemis walked and Wherry singled to load the bases for Stanfill's RBI single. Cunningham's base hit sent Bemis home. Brittany York connected on a two-out single to score Wherry. The Friars got two runs back in the top of the second inning. Christy Becker and Jenna Garcia started the frame with back-to-back doubles to put PC on the scoreboard. Teresa Bertels' base hit placed runners on the corners for Jen Abrams' RBI single to make it a 3-2 game. Louisville took advantage of three hits, three walks and two errors to put up a five spot in the second. The inning was highlighted by Cunningham's two-run double that scored Bemis who had walked and Wherry who reached on an error. Cunningham took third on the throw home and crossed the plate on another Friar miscue. Mary Rose Sheehy's one-out home run in the third made the score 8-3. Stanfill's two-run homer in the third increased Louisville's lead to 10-3. Wherry connected on a one-out single to set up Stanfill's shot over centerfield for her third homer of the year. Wadwell (28-5) picked up her second win of the day after holding the Friars scoreless on two hits and striking out five in 4.0 innings of relief. Freshman Tori Collins started the game in the circle, giving up three earned runs on seven hits and fanning four in 3.0 innings. Stanfill and Cunningham each went 2 for 4 with three RBI and a run. Wherry was 2 for 4 with three runs and an RBI. Bertolette (4-11) took the loss, allowing eight runs, five earned, on eight hits. Becker led Providence, going 2 for 4. The Friars drop to 11-20 (3-4 BIG EAST). Louisville (34-5, 10-2) will play host to Eastern Kentucky Tuesday, April 7 at 5 p.m. |
