LEXINGTON, Ky. - - Senior Melissa Roth's one-out home run sparked a three-run eighth that also included freshman Alicja Wolny's first collegiate homer as the No. 18/20 University of Louisville softball defeated host Kentucky 3-0 Wednesday night.

"This was a great game," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "We pitched very well tonight which allowed us to hold them and our offense came through. Kentucky has a solid team, and Chandra Bell did a great job until we were finally able to break the door open. This is always an emotional game, both teams want to win and both teams came to play tonight."

The contest featured a pitcher's duel through seven innings with Louisville's Tori Collins and Kristen Wadwell combining on a one-hitter and UK's Chandra Bell scattering three hits to push the game into extra innings.

The Cards had an opportunity to score in the top of the fourth when Wolny led off with a double and Colby Wherry's single placed runners on the corners with no outs. Bell retired the next three batters to get out of the inning.

Kentucky's Megan Yocke led off the seventh with a single and took second on Natalie Smith's sacrifice bunt to give the Wildcats a runner in scoring position for the first time in the game. Wadwell struck out Brittany Cervantes and got Rachel Riley to pop up to shortstop Colby Wherry to send the game into the eighth inning.

Roth's solo home run in the top of the eighth put the Cardinals on the scoreboard. With one out in the inning, Roth took a 1-2 count over the left field fence for her team-leading fifth home run of the season. Chelsea Bemis connected on a two-out single to set up Wolny's homer, increasing the lead to 3-0.

Samantha DeMartine singled in the home half of the eighth, but was left stranded at first as Louisville evened the series record at 12-12 and picked up its sixth straight win over the Wildcats.

Wadwell (5-3) got the win, allowing one hit and striking out three in 3.0 innings of relief. Collins started the game and surrendered only one hit and struck out three to share the shutout. Wolny paced Louisville offensively with a 2 for 4, two-run performance at the plate.

Bell (8-3) took the loss, giving up three earned runs on six hits and striking out seven in eight innings. Yocke and DeMartine accounted for the Wildcats' two hits.
