Cardinals Earn Two Runner-Up Finishes at Head of the Hooch Regatta
Nov. 1, 2008
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Louisville rowing team closed the fall racing season with a pair of second-place finishes on Saturday at the Head of the Hooch Regatta, the largest regatta in the south. The Cards' `A' varsity eight crew of Ashley Edwardson (coxswain), Anastasia Prokopenko, Kristin Falovo, Mallory Hamman, Sam Kayser, Sarah Fiske, Sha'Lori Moore, Katie Rorer and Allison Pelette earned a runner-up finish in the Championship 8+ event after completing the 5,000-meter course through downtown Chattanooga in a time of 16 minutes, 20.7 seconds, just two seconds ahead of first place Clemson, which won the 26-team event with a time of 16:18.7. Tennessee was third with a time of 16:33.7. "Clemson has shown great speed this fall and it was great to see us inch closer to them," said Cards' head coach Laura Fogt. "We saw both Tennessee and Clemson two weeks ago at the Head of the Charles and we were able to gain speed on both crews in the past two weeks. It was a great accomplishment for the ladies and I'm extremely proud of their efforts. It was a great way to conclude the fall racing season and we can go indoors with good information for what we need to work on over the next several months." The Cards' second varsity eight crew of Mandey Erdman (coxswain), Laura Cers, Katie Scordo, Lauren Mensch, Chelsea Haack, Lisa Grace, Samantha Seldon, Jill Reeves and Anna Zwanzig finished 11th in the race with a time of 17:17.1, while the third varsity crew of Anna Kirk (coxswain), Kira Lawson, Ashley Anderson, Chelsea Reeves, Brittany Hall, Annie Stadig, Shannon Elias, Allison Siu and Ruthie Fligor finished 22nd.
"The second varsity eight saw good things out on the course today," Fogt said. "They raced a consistent race and showed good pockets of speed. Depth is critical to our continued improvement. I would like to see them closer to the varsity eight, so that is something we will be working on over the next several months." In the Championship 4+ event, the Cards' `A' crew of Edwardson (coxswain), Hamman, Falovo, Prokopenko and Pelette finished with a time of 18:21.1 to trail only first-place finishing Clemson with a time of 18:08.2. Tennessee was again third among the field of 28 total entries with a time of 18:28.0, while Clemson's `B' boat was fourth overall at 18:30.1. The Cards' second varsity four boat with Erdman (coxswain), Kayser, Mensch, Moore and Rorer finished seventh at 18:41.9, while their third crew of Tara McKiernan (coxswain), Cers, Scordo, Fiske and Haack finished 22nd at 19:51.9. "The varsity fours showed good speed and the ladies earned another silver medal," Fogt said. "They had a great race and were really happy with how effortless it felt." In novice action, Louisville's novice four boat finished 12th of 16 crews in the Freshman Novice 4+ event with a time of 22:13.7, while Duke led the way with a time of 19:23.8. In the Freshman Novice 8+ race, Louisville's novice eight boat finished 15th overall in a field of 17 with a time of 20:02.6, while Alabama led the way with a time of 18:03.7. Following the winter break, the Cards will return to action with a spring training trip to Oak Ridge, Tenn., on March 14-20. During the trip, the Cards are scheduled to race Duke, Buffalo and Tulsa.
