Cards' Signee Mary Dean Named Top High School Senior at US Lacrosse National Tournament
May 30, 2007 LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville lacrosse signee Mary Dean was named the top player in the high school senior only division at last weekend's US Lacrosse National Tournament in Bethlehem, Pa., and a total of 13 Cardinal signees competed at the national all-star event. Dean, a senior at Cheltenham (Pa.) High School, was named the inaugural winner of the Beth Stone Award for the top high school senior at the event. Dean had a pair of assists in the Senior All-Stars' game against the U.S. U-19 team and helped the Yellow Team capture the championship in the Senior Only division. "Mary is a talented lacrosse player who showed her maturity and decision making skills to the lacrosse community this past weekend," said U of L head coach Kellie Young, who signed Dean to a national letter-of-intent last fall in the Cards' first 22-player recruiting class. "She has built a strong foundation for success at the Division I level." Joining Dean on the Senior All-Star team were U of L signees Lianne Bobal (Annandale, N.J.), Brittany Poist (Hampstead, Md.) and Kellianne Wunk (Ellicott City, Md.). Also competing at the US Lacrosse National Tournament, which includes five divisions of play, were Cardinal signees Emily Dashiell (Salisbury, Md.), Katie Dillon (Louisville, Ky.), Emily Falk (Clifton, Va.), Bergan Foley (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.), Natalie Hopkins (Easton, Md.), Liz Lovejoy (Greenwich, Conn.), Kelsey McDowell (Abington, Pa.) and Abby Wah (Cockeysville, Md.). "I am so incredibly proud of the 12 student-athletes who competed in the US Lacrosse National Tournament," said Young, who was hired as the Cards' first head coach on July 20, 2006. "They were tremendous representatives of the University of Louisville, competing at such a high level and performing as a team prior to ever arriving on our campus." The Cardinal lacrosse team will open its first varsity season in March of 2008 and will compete as a full BIG EAST member in 2009. The Women's Division National Tournament began in 1933 as a tournament to showcase the best Post-Collegiate and club women's lacrosse players. Since that time, it has grown into one of the largest women's lacrosse events in the nation and features five levels of play. Tournament highlights include division championships, a U.S. Team exhibition, the High School All-Star game and a premier recruiting opportunity for high school players.
