Cards Overcome Second Half Deficit for 13-12 Win Over Davidson
April 20, 2008
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Emily Dashiell had a career-high five goals while Brittany Poist scored the game-winning goal with 2:46 left in the game to lead the Louisville lacrosse team to a 13-12 win over Davidson College on Sunday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium. After trailing for most of the second half, the Cards (10-4) evened the game at 12-12 with 4:42 to go as first-year attacker Shayna Stearns scored on an assist from Poist, and less than two minutes later Poist's unassisted goal gave the Cards the lead for good. Overall, the game featured four lead changes and nine ties. Davidson (10-5) missed on a pair of shot attempts in the final two minutes and the Cards regained possession of the ball inside the final 30 seconds to clinch the win. Dashiell, a first-year midfielder, added one assist on the day to finish with six total points, while Poist added three goals and two assists to go along with another strong defensive effort. The first-year midfielder, who entered the week ranked second in the nation in caused turnovers (2.92 per game) and 10th in ground balls (3.25 per game) had six caused turnovers, four ground balls and four draw controls on Sunday. Louisville earned the victory despite playing without its two top goal scorers on the season, Bergan Foley and Sierra Smith-Hart. Foley, a first-year attacker and the nation's top goal scorer at 4.23 goals per game, missed the game with a bruised left knee suffered in practice last week. Smith-Hart, a first-year midfielder and the Cards' second-leading scorer with 30 goals in 13 games, is out for the season with a torn ACL in her right knee suffered in the Cards' win over UC Davis last Monday.
"Some how, we found a way to win today when we didn't play our best," said Cards' head coach Kellie Young. "We made a lot of simple mistakes that turned into goals, yet we were resilient enough to get the win. I'm proud of the way our team climbed out of the two-goal deficit in the second half and found a way to win after trailing in the final five minutes." Along with the performances from Dashiell and Poist, the Cards got two goals from Liz Lovejoy, while Lianne Bobal and Sammy Allen added one goal each. Bobal also had a team-high four draw controls, while Kelsey McDowell finished with two caused turnovers and two ground balls in the win. "Lianne Bobal was huge for us today with her draw controls and the way she changed the momentum on the field," Young said. "Brittany Poist did a great job in transition and six caused turnovers is never bad. Emily Dashiell gave us a great offensive lift in the first half, which forced Davidson to face-guard her in the second half and she still had a big goal for us in the final 20 minutes."
Neither team held a lead larger than two goals. After exchanging the lead twice and tying the game six times in the first 22 minutes, the Cards' built the first two-goal lead late in the first half as back-to-back goals from Bobal and Dashiell made it 8-6 with 4:58 left. The Wildcats responded by scoring four straight goals, including two over the final 4:27 of the first half to even things at 8-8 at halftime. Davidson opened the second half with back-to-back goals from Emily Diefendorf to build the lead to 10-8 with 24:26 left in the game. After the Cards cut it to 10-9 on another goal from Poist, the Wildcats pushed the lead out to two for the final time at 11-9 with 19:42 to go. After Louisville tied the game at 11-11 with 16:47 left on goals from Lovejoy and Dashiell, Davidson regained the lead for the last time at 12-11 on a Haley Cook goal with 10:45 to go in the game. The Wildcats held the one-goal advantage for more than six minutes before Stearns and Poist pushed the Cards back in front for good. Both teams attempted 32 shots on the day, and ground balls were even at12-12. The Cards held a slim 14-13 advantage in draw controls, and U of L finished with 17 turnovers to the Wildcats' 16. Up next, the Cards will close their 2008 home schedule against Cincinnati on Tuesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. ET. Admission is free for all Louisville lacrosse games and all games are played at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium, located on S. Floyd St., next door to the Yum! Center. |
