Field Hockey Earns No. 2 Seed in BIG EAST Conference Tournament

The University of Louisville field hockey team has earned the No. 2 seed in the 2008 BIG EAST Championship and will play host Connecticut in the semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1:30 p.m. Saturday's other semifinal game features top-seeded Syracuse and the No. 4 seed Providence College. The winners will advance to the championship game which will be played Sunday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. All games will be held at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex.

For the first time since 2003, there is a three-way tie for the regular season title. Syracuse, Louisville and Connecticut all earned a share of the title after completing the regular season with 5-1 records in conference play. In addition, this is the second year in a row in which the same four teams have made the BIG EAST Championship.

Louisville earned the No. 2 seed with a 14-5 (5-1 BIG EAST) record that includes 11 games against ranked opponents. UofL earned a share of the regular season title with an 11-0 win over Georgetown on Nov. 1. This marks the third straight year the Cardinals have earned a share of the regular season title.

Connecticut is the No. 3 seed and enters the championship with a 16-2 record and a 5-1 mark in BIG EAST action. For the 11th time in the program's history, UConn has garnered a share of the BIG EAST regular season title. The Huskies earned a share of the title after defeating Villanova 4-0 on Nov 1.

Syracuse earned the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Championship. Syracuse ends the regular season with a 18-1 overall mark, with the 18 victories being a program best. The Orange finished with a 5-1 mark in conference play. Syracuse is enjoying its most successful year in program history. SU earned its first ever No. 1 ranking in the NFHCA Poll on Oct. 14 and became the first women's team at Syracuse to ever reach No. 1 in a national poll.

Providence brings a 12-8 overall record and 3-3 BIG EAST mark into the Championship. The Friars earned the No. 4 seed on Oct. 26 after defeating Georgetown 6-2. It marks the first time Providence has made appearances at the BIG EAST Championship in three consecutive seasons since doing so from 1996-98.

 

 

Syracuse and Providence will face off in the first semifinal game on Nov. 8 at 11 a.m., with Louisville and Connecticut to follow at 1:30 p.m. The two semifinal winners will face each other Nov. 9 in a 1 p.m. match for the title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
