No. 16 Field Hockey Rolls to 13-0 Win Over Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS - - Sophomore Hayley Turner and junior Simone Attles scored three goals apiece as the 16th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team registered a school-record 13 goals and notched its second straight shutout in a 13-0 win over host Saint Louis Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals got on the scoreboard at the 11:20 mark in the game when Turner connected on an assist from junior Nicole Youman. Three minutes later, Turner delivered her second goal of the game. Junior Tuli Lim scored at the 20:26 mark to open a five minute scoring span in which the Cards rattled off four goals. Senior Kayla May and Attles scored during that frame and Turner completed her hat trick with her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

U of L entered halftime up 6-0 after outshooting the Billikens 20-0 and holding 9-0 lead in penalty corners.

The Cards continued the offense with seven second half goals. Senior Julie Anne Smith increased the lead to 7-0 with a feed from junior Jenna Ahern. Freshman Amber Thomas recorded her first collegiate goal, and ten minutes later, added another to make it a 9-0 game. Junior Nikki Auker deflected sophomore Heather Steven's shot and the Cardinals went ahead 10-0 midway through the second half. Attles added two unassisted goals to complete her first career hat trick and Youman completed the scoring with just under two minutes remaining in the game.

 

 

With the win 13-0 win, the Cards broke the school's single game scoring record of 11, which was set in the Nov. 1, 2008 11-0 victory over Georgetown. Senior Heather Bustanoby and redshirt freshman Erin Conrad combined for the Cards' third shutout in four games. U of L outshot Saint Louis 38-2 and held a 13-1 advantage in corners in the game.

Saint Louis goalkeeper Alex Labarge collected five saves, while Katherine Deem posted nine stops in the cage for the Billikens (1-4).

The Cardinals (4-2) will open BIG EAST Conference play on Friday, Sept. 18 when they play host to No. 8 Syracuse at 4 p.m. The Orange enter Trager Stadium as the preseason pick to win the league after coming off of a 2008 NCAA semifinal appearance.

Friday's contest will also be part of 10th anniversary celebration of Cardinal Park on Friday, September 18, beginning with the field hockey game against Syracuse.

The event will commemorate a 10-year run for Cardinal Park, which has now been renamed Owsley B. Frazier Cardinal Park. The day will be highlighted by four main events, all occurring at venues in the park, which also includes a pep rally in preparation for the Cardinals' football game at the University of Kentucky the following day.
