The University of Louisville (13-15, 5-10) women's basketball team fell 72-52 at Rutgers (17-13, 9-7) Monday night in the regular season finale. Freshman Rachel Story led the Cardinals in scoring with 16 points and Monique Reid finished with 13 points. Three Rutgers players
finished with double figures led by Khadijah Rushden with 16 points.
The first half of the game was tightly contested, Louisville took an
18-15 lead with just over nine minutes remaining in the half. The Scarlet Knights tied the game at 20 with a three point play from April Sykes at the 5:36 mark. Sykes scored the next basket for Rutgers at the
3:21 mark, sparking a 9-0 run for the Scarlet Knights.
Freshman Asia Taylor stopped the scoring drought with two free throws with just under two minutes remaining in the half. But the Cardinals could not stop Rutgers' momentum. The Scarlet Knights outscored Louisville 14-3 in the final four minutes to end the half with a 34-23 lead.
The Cardinals started out sluggish in the second half and the Scarlet Knights took advantage with a 13-5 run taking a 47-29 lead with just
over 13 minutes to play. The Cardinals cut the lead to 17 twice in the
second half but could never get closer.
Louisville finished the game shooting 39.6 percent from the field while Rutgers shot 56.0 percent from the field. Louisville outrebounded Rutgers 33-24 but could not overcome its 26 turnovers.
Louisville will be back in action on Friday, March 5 in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament in Hartford, Conn. at the XL Center. The
Cardinals will face Pittsburgh at noon in the first round.
