Sept. 28, 2004

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville freshman cross country runner Wesley Korir was named Conference USA Men's Athlete of the Week for the second time this season after winning last Saturday's Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park.

Korir, a native of Eldoret, Kenya, covered the 8-kilometer course in 24 minutes, 22.82 seconds to finish nearly 22 seconds in front of a field of 397 runners and lead the Cardinals to a dominating team victory. Korir has now won all three events in 2004, including the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University on Sept. 11 and the Woodford Trials hosted by Kentucky on Sept. 3, while U of L is also a perfect 3-for-3 taking all three team titles at those events.

"I'm happy for Wesley and for our entire team because they've all worked very hard to be at this point," said U of L head coach Ron Mann, in his first season with the Cardinal program. "I'm pleased with the way things have started, but we've got to continue to stay focused on working hard and improving because things are going to get tougher and tougher as the season moves forward."

U of L will next host the Cardinal Cross Country Classic on Saturday at the U of L Shelby Campus. The event will begin at 10 a.m. ET with the women's 5-kilometer race followed by the men's 8-kilometer race at 10:45 a.m.
