Cards Set for Indoor Track Season Today at SIU's Fast Start Invitational
Dec. 5, 2008
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's and women's indoor track and field teams are set to begin their 2008-09 season today at the Fast Start Invitational hosted by Southern Illinois University at the SIU Recreational Center in Carbondale, Ill. The meet will begin at 11:30 p.m. ET with the throwing events, while the track events are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. ET. This will be the only event for U of L in December. "I'm extremely excited to start the indoor season and this will be a good test for us," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "It is always good to get in a pre-holiday meet so that our staff can evaluate the progress we have made early on and prepare for the rest of the indoor season." The Cardinals are coming off a highly successful end to their 2008 campaign when they won the program's first ever women's conference title at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships and advanced a school record 10 athletes, a women's record six, to the NCAA Outdoor Championships where three, Jere' Summers, Andre Black, and Michael Eaton, became NCAA All-Americans in the shot put, triple jump, and 10,000m, respectively. The men finished 31st at the NCAA Championships. U of L hopes to capitalize on a strong finish to the 2007 indoor season as Seidre Forde set a school record with a 10th place finish in the triple jump, matching the best individual finish by a Cardinal woman. Mann fresh off his coaching duties at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will return three of the four NCAA indoor participants in Summers and Forde to the women's team, while Black returns for the Cardinal men. Tone Belt will also see action for the first time since 2006-07 after sitting out last year due to a medical redshirt.
The Cards will have a little over a month to prepare for their next meet on Jan. 10 at the Indiana Open in Bloomington, Ind. |
