Black Finishes 17th in Triple Jump at US Olympic Team Trials

EUGENE, Ore. - University of Louisville jumper Andre Black finished 17th in the qualifying round of the men's triple jump on Friday at the US Olympic Team Trials at Hayward Field. A native of Mobile, Ala., Black had a leap of 51 feet, 11 inches (15.82m) in his first ever appearance at the Trials. The top 12 jumpers in Friday's qualifying round will return for Sunday's final, where the top three finishers will represent Team USA at the 2008 Summer Olympics next month in Beijing, China. Overall, the Cards had three athletes compete at the US Olympic Team Trials as Tone Belt (men's long jump) and Jere' Summers (women's discus) also represented the University of Louisville in Oregon, while Rudon Bastian (men's long jump) competed for a bid at the Bahamas Olympic Trials last weekend. Also on Friday, University of Louisville runner Tarah McKay advanced to the final of the women's 1,500m run at the Canadian Olympic Trials with a 10th-place finish in the semifinal round at University of Windsor Stadium. McKay, a native of St. Clements, Ont., finished with a personal best time of 4:23.91 to earn one of 13 spots for Saturday's final, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET. She was more than a second faster than her previous best time of 4:25.00 set last season, and less than one second away from the school record mark of 4:23.07 held by Bettina Bard. Following the Olympic qualifying events, Louisville throwers D'Ana McCarty and Chinwe Okoro will represent Team USA at the IAAF World Junior Championships on July 8-13 in Poland. McCarty will compete in the women's hammer, while Okoro will compete in the women's shot put.
