Turland Hits NCAA Men's Track & Field Regional Qualifying Mark
Feb. 23, 2003
POMONA, Calif. - In his first ever collegiate track and field meet, University of Louisville freshman Arthur Turland won the discus event and qualified for the NCAA Regionals Saturday evening at the Carl Rossi Relays in Pomona, Calif. Turland won the event with a throw of 167 feet, 10 inches, better than last year's Conference USA winning throw. With the mark, the Kincardine, Ontario, native qualified for the NCAA Mid-East Regional, which will be held May 30-31 at Ohio State. Turland also placed eighth in the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 165-5. The Cardinals also had impressive showings in the discus by freshman Brandon Cook and junior Troy Williams. Cook narrowly missed the regional qualifying mark (165 feet) with a third-place throw of 160-1. Williams finished fourth with a personal-best toss of 155-3. In the shot put, Williams and junior John Blackwell tied for eighth place with throws of 44-1.25. Senior Brad Roach placed 10th in the javelin after recording a distance of 151-6. Cook was 15th at 138-8. "This was a great opening meet for our throwers," said U of L head coach Gene Weis. "They are so much stronger, a real credit to (Throws) Coach (Damien) Kalvar. Several had huge personal bests, and the NCAA regional qualifying is big for us, especially for a freshman. It's been a while since we had an NCAA presence. I couldn't be more pleased!" The Cardinals' full squad will travel to Tempe, Ariz., March 8 for the Bill Sawyer Invitational.
