The No. 13/17 Louisville men's soccer team played UIC to a 1-1 Sunday afternoon in the finale of the Courtyard by Marriott East Cardinal Classic presented by Mockingbird Soccer Club. The Cardinals improve to 3-0-1 overall while UIC improves to 0-2-2 on the season.
"I was proud of the effort that we put in today," said head coach Ken Lolla. "We are disappointed it wasn't a better result but it was against a good team that came out and made it difficult on us."
The first period ended in a scoreless tie. The Cardinals outshot UIC 4-0 in the first period and had a 2-0 corner kick advantage. Neither team had a shot on goal in the first period.
The Cardinals picked up the intensity in the second period. Junior Mark Knight found sophomore Colin Rolfe who broke away from the defense and dribbled inside the box to beat the keeper and put the Cards up 1-0 in the 49th minute. The Flames' Charlie Trout scored the equalizer in the 62nd minute with a blast from 30 yards out.
Neither team was able to convert in the first overtime period. The Cardinals' best chances were back-to-back shots by Austin Berry and Paolo DelPiccolo in the 100th minute. In the second overtime period, UIC had two shots blocked inside the box in the 112th and 113th minute. Gerardo Chavez blasted a shot from inside the box but hit the post in the 115th minute.
Louisville finished the game with a 16-8 advantage and a 10-0 corner kick advantage. Cardinal keeper Andre Boudreaux finished the game with two saves while UIC keeper Jovan Bubonja finished with six saves.
Senior Phil Edginton, senior Othaniel Yanez and Rolfe were all named to the all-tournament team.
