LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
The University of Louisville men's soccer assistant coach Brian Maisonneuve recently helped guide the United States Under-20 Men's National Team to the 2009 FIFA World Cup in Egypt as an assistant on the staff.
"Anytime you get to coach or play for your country it is truly an honor," said Maisonneuve. "Whether you're at a training camp of World Cup qualifying, to represent your country is an experience you will never forget."
The U-20 team fell to Costa Rica 3-0 in the CONCACAF Championship final in Trinidad and Tobago, but had already secured their spot in the FIFA World Cup, which will take place Sept. 24-Oct. 16, by winning Group A. The U.S. team was seeking their first-ever regional title and entered the game on a 10-game winning streak in CONCACAF qualifying.
Maisonneuve has been an assistant coach with the U-20 National Team since 2007, helping lead them through the 2007 CONCACAF qualification process to the FIFA World Cup in Canada.
Maisonneuve played for the US National Team from 1997-2002, including competing in the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France and the 1996 Olympic Games. He played professionally in the MLS from 1996-2004 for the Columbus Crew.
