Louisville, Ky. - The Louisville (6-4-0, 3-2-0) men's soccer team defeated No. 12/20 South Florida (7-2-1, 2-2-1) Saturday evening in Cardinal Park. The win is the first time since 2005 that the Cardinals have defeated a ranked opponent. The last when over a ranked opponent was on Sept. 18, 2005 when the Cardinals upset No. 1 Connecticut.

"We have been focusing on hitting a certain standard in every game," said head coach Ken Lolla. "I think that tonight we hit that standard. I thought that we were excellent on defense tonight. South Florida is a hard team to break down and I think tonight we forced them into it because of them taking Aaron down and getting the red card. I am proud of the way our guys handled themselves tonight."

The first period ended in a scoreless tie. The Cardinal defense did not allow a shot on goal in the first half. Louisville finished the period with a 6-2 shot advantage with three shots on goal.

In the 50th minute of the second half, USF's Andre Mittoo took Aaron Clapham down hard and was issued a red card and ejected from the game. The Bulls had to play one man down the rest of the half.

Senior Marco Terminesi got into a one-on-one situation with the Bulls' keeper. Diego Restrepo got a hand on the first shot and went down without collecting the ball. Terminesi retrieved the ball and hit the right back side of the net for the game winner in the 69th minute.

The Cardinal defense held tough again not allowing a shot on goal the whole game to secure the win. Cardinal keeper David Simolike and the Cardinal defense recorded their fourth shutout of the season, and their third in BIG EAST play. Louisville finished the game with a 13-5 shot advantage.

Louisville will take a break from league play as they host No. 17 Indiana on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
