Huntington, W.Va. -
The Louisville (3-1-0) men's soccer team defeated Marshall (1-2-0) 4-1 on Sunday afternoon in Huntington, W. Va. Senior Marco Terminesi scored two goals and dished out one assist in the second half to give the Cardinals their third straight win.
"Under the circumstances we played very well," said head coach Ken Lolla. "We fought through some adversity and fought back from a goal down. We played well enough to win a tough game on the road."
The Thundering Herd struck early when midfielder Dana Heimbecker took a ball from Osric Flores and drove a shot from outside the 18-yard box past David Simolike in the 2nd minute of the game. The Cardinals were able to take advantage of Marshall playing one man down to score the equalizer when Gerardo Chavez scored off a Terminesi shot deflection that was initially saved by Marshall keeper Brad Kennedy.
Louisville took the lead seven minutes before halftime as Aaron Clapham was on the receiving end of another Louisville shot that was saved by Kennedy, but was deflected to Clapham, who put the shot away to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead heading into the half.
The Cardinals found themselves playing one man down when defender Phil Edington was given a red card in the 47th minute of play. The Cardinals continued to dominate on the attack in the second half. Terminesi secured the victory when he took the ball from outside the 18-yard box and dribbled to his right and beat a diving Kennedy. Two minutes later, Terminesi hit the other side of the goal from a pass from Gerardo Chavez.
Louisville finished the game with a 15-11 shot advantage. Simolike finished the game with five saves while Marshall's Kennedy finished with five saves.
Louisville will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 15 as they travel to No. 1 Wake Forest to take on the Demon Deacons.
