The 20th ranked Louisville men's soccer team opened the season with a scoreless tie against No. 11 Duke Friday evening in the Nike Duke Classic. The Cards' defense held the Blue Devils without a shot on goal.
Junior Austin Berry had the first opportunity for the Cardinals in the first half at the 15 minute mark. Freshman Aaron Horton had a shot saved in the 25th minute and senior J.T. Murray tested the Blue Devil keeper again in the 36th minute. Cardinal keeper Andre Boudreaux was not tested in the first half.
The Cardinal attack challenged the Blue Devils early in the second half, junior Kenney Walker had an opportunity in the 49th minute but Duke's Belshaw came up with the save. Walker finished the second period with four shots on goal but the Cardinals could not find the net, sending the game into overtime. Duke's best opportunity came in the 60th minute when Ryan Finley's shot hit the post.
Louisville's best opportunity came with a penalty kick in the second overtime period but Belshaw was able to punch out Paolo DelPiccolo's try. Sophomore Buck Tufty had another opportunity in the final minute but could not find the back of the net ending the game in a scoreless tie. The Cardinal defense held Duke without a shot on goal in 110 minutes of play.
Louisville finished the game with 15 shots on goal and held a 30-13 shot advantage. Louisville also had a 9-4 corner kick advantage. Belshaw finished with 15 saves while Boudreaux was not tested.
The Cardinals will play N.C. State in the second round of the Duke Nike Classic on Sunday at Noon.
