Anderson Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year; Five Others Honored

Providence, R.I. - The 2008 All-BIG EAST football teams were announced on Wednesday the University of Louisville was well represented as red-shirt freshman was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and senior center Eric Wood earned first team honors for the second straight year. Anderson is the first Louisville player to earn BIG EAST Rookie of the Year honors after he finished fifth in the conference in rushing (87.2 yards per game). Anderson ran for 1,047 yards and eight touchdowns in a freshman season in which he had five 100-yard games. He was the Cardinals' first 1,000-yard rusher since Michael Bush rushed for 1,143 yards in 2005. Anderson also earned second team All-BIG EAST honors. Wood earned All-BIG EAST honors for the third straight season. He earned first team in 2008 and 2007, and was a second team selection in 2006. The product of Cincinnati, Ohio, ended his career with a string of 49 straight starts, the second-longest streak in school history. Wood was recently named one of the finalists for the Rimington Award, which goes to the best center in the country. Senior guard George Bussey also earned All-League accolades for the third straight season. After earning second team honors a year ago, Bussey was a first team selection this year, as well as, in 2006 when the Cardinals won the league. This season, Bussey started all 12 games, showing versatility by playing both guard and tackle. Sophomore wide receiver Doug Beaumont was a second team honoree after leading the Cardinals in receptions and yards. The 5-10 speedster caught 62 passes for 750 yards in his first full season at the wide receiver position. Beaumont also averaged 9.6 yards a punt return.
Despite injuries that kept him in and out of the lineup, junior Trent Guy was a second team selection as a kick returner. Guy averaged 24.5 yards a kick return this season and returned one for a touchdown. The junior from Charlotte, N.C. returned a kick 95 yards in a 35-28 win over Memphis. It was the fourth special teams touchdown in his career. Despite a much-improved defense in 2008, junior linebacker Jon Dempsey was the lone selection on the defensive side of the football, earning All-BIG EAST second team accolades Dempsey, a junior-college transfer at linebacker, led the Cardinals in tackles with 80 and had eight tackles for loss. |
