LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville has terminated the contract of head football coach Steve Kragthorpe with two years remaining, Vice-President/Director of Athletics Tom Jurich announced on Saturday.

Kragthorpe, 44, just finished his third season at the University of Louisville, guiding the Cardinals to a 15-21 overall record and a 5-16 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. His 2009 squad finished 4-8 overall and 1-6 in the league after a 34-14 loss on Friday to Rutgers.

Kragthorpe was named the program's 20th head coach on January 9, 2007. That season, Kragthorpe guided the Cardinals to a 6-6 record, but oversaw some big wins during his first campaign. Louisville upset 15th-ranked and undefeated Cincinnati 28-24 at Nippert Stadium. Louisville also had a big road win at NC State that season, and a come-from-behind 41-38 win over Rutgers in the 2007 season finale.

The Cardinals had one of the most explosive offenses in the country that season, finishing fourth in the country in passing offense (341.92 ypg), sixth in total offense (488.0 ypg) and 18th in scoring (35.17 ppg). However, the Cardinals missed a bowl game for the first time in nine seasons. Quarterback Brian Brohm enjoyed his finest season, throwing for 4,024 yards and a school record 30 touchdown passes.

In 2008, the Cardinals finished with a 5-7 record, but raced to an impressive 5-2 start before injuries took its toll. After a season-opening loss to Kentucky, the Cardinals went on to win five of the next six games, including a 24-20 win at home over South Florida. It was Kragthorpe's second win over a Top 25 team as head coach of the Cardinals. However, a key injury to Scott Long and other starters were one of the main reasons why the Cardinals dropped their final five games of that season.

In seven seasons as a head coach, including four at Tulsa University, Kragthorpe owns a 44-43 record. He went 29-22 with the Golden Hurricane program.

Jurich stated that a national search will begin immediately for the Cardinals next head coach.
