April 20, 2007 LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior linebacker Preston Smith hauled in an interception in overtime to clinch a 51-45 win for the White team in the annual Red & White Scrimmage on Friday night in front of a U of L spring game record crowd of 28,000 fans at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. The scrimmage, which closed the Cards' 2007 spring drills under the direction of first-year head coach Steve Kragthorpe, matched the U of L offense (Red team) against the defense (White team). The game included a standard scoring system for the offense and a unique scoring system for the defense, including two points for stopping a drive, three points for a three & out, six points for forcing a turnover and seven points for returning a turnover for a touchdown. Trailing 36-17 after a three and out possession with 9:45 left in the third quarter, the Red team scored four touchdowns over the final 21 minutes, 37 seconds of regulation, including a pair of scoring passes from senior quarterback Brian Brohm to junior wide receiver Mario Urrutia, to send the game into a one possession overtime period. In overtime, Brohm looked for senior wide receiver Harry Douglas crossing the middle of the field, but Douglas juggled the ball and Smith gathered in the interception to score six points for the White team and secure the win. Brohm finished the night 23-of-38 passing for 313 yards and three touchdowns, while junior backup Hunter Cantwell was 17-of-35 for 210 yards. Douglas led the Cardinal receivers with eight catches for 137 yards, while sophomore Scott Long had four catches for 120 yards. On defense, the Cards had four interceptions, four sacks and 10 tackles for loss, while junior linebacker Mozell Axson led the way with eight tackles, while senior linebacker had Terrance Butler added six solo tackles. During the Friday's pre-game activities, U of L held a moment of silence and the Cards' marching band presented the Virginia Tech Alma Mater in honor of the victims of Monday's tragic events on the campus of Virginia Tech. The Cardinal football team will open the 2007 season on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET against Murray State and the game will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
