Louisville, Ky. -
Former Green Bay Packers defensive quality control coach Eric Lewis was hired to coach the cornerbacks at the University of Louisville, announced Cardinals' head coach Steve Kragthorpe on Wednesday.
Lewis joins the Louisville staff after spending two seasons with the Packers, who were eliminated by the New York Giants in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday.
Hired by Mike McCarthy in 2006, the 31-year-old Lewis joined the Packers after serving as the secondary coach at Ball State University for three seasons.
With the Packers, Lewis assisted cornerbacks coach Lionel Washington and secondary coach Kurt Schottenheimer. His duties include breaking down opponent game film as well as organizing the playbook and installation.
While at Ball State, Lewis coached former Cowboys safety Justin Beriault to back-to back first team All-Mid-American Conference honors (2003-04) and 125 tackles in 2004.
Prior to his tenure at Ball State, Lewis was the defensive backs coach at Bucknell and earlier, in 2001, worked as a defensive graduate assistant at Michigan State, where he primarily assisted with the defensive backs. On the Spartans' staff, he worked with current tight ends coach Ben McAdoo.
Lewis began his coaching career at San Diego's St. Augustine High School as a receivers coach during the spring football season. He then spent two years as a financial consultant at Morgan Stanley in San Diego and Smith Barney in Boston before returning to coaching in the collegiate ranks.
As a player, Lewis was a four-year starter (1995-98) at San Diego State and earned All-Western Athletic Conference second-team honors as a senior. Honorable mention All-WAC in 1995, he completed his career as the Aztecs' all-time leader in pass breakups. Lewis was a teammate of current Packers defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila for three seasons while in college. He graduated from the school with a degree in finance and business administration.
Very familiar with the Green Bay Packers, Lewis' father, Sherman, was the Packers' offensive coordinator from 1992-99 and a 22-year NFL coaching veteran.
Born in East Lansing, Mich., Lewis and his wife, Sara, live in Green Bay with their daughter Taylor, 1.
