Freshman center Samardo Samuels scored 33 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Red team to a 106-48 victory over the White squad in an intrasquad scrimmage for the University of Louisville men's basketball team on Saturday at the Yum! Center.

Terrence Williams approached a triple double with 19 points, nine assists and eight rebounds for the Red team, which consisted of the primary starters for the Cardinals. Williams has been back to practice for a week after arthroscopic surgery on a medial meniscus tear in his right knee had sidelined him for three weeks.

All of the Red team members scored in double digits. Point guard Andre McGee hit 5-of-11 three pointers and scored 23 points with six assists and only two turnovers. Earl Clark totalled 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Jerry Smith produced 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

"I think the Red team is ready to open (the season)," said U of L Coach Rick Pitino. "I think they're sound in every area. I was really impressed with their passing, execution and defense. Our biggest glaring weakness is rebounding. Samardo and Earl are just not hitting someone and creating enough rebounding space. That's what we have to work on in the next few days."

Preston Knowles led the White team with 13 points and Reginald Delk added 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. The White team shot 29.9 percent from the field and committed 26 turnovers.

The Red team built a 61-20 halftime advantage while shooting 59.4 percent, assisting on 14 of its 19 first-half baskets and committing just six turnovers.

The Cardinals were without four injured players in the scrimmage, including Edgar Sosa (sprained fingers in his right hand sustained in practice on Friday; expected back by Tuesday), Kyle Kuric (high right ankle sprain sustained in the Cards' exhibition against Georgetown College; day-to-day), Lee Steiden (sprained right ankle; out 2 weeks) and Chris Brickley (strained left hamstring; day-to-day).

Ranked third in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls, the Cardinals will start their season at least a week later than any other Top 25 team. U of L will open its season against Morehead State in the first round of the Billy Minardi Classic on Nov. 22 at 5:30 p.m. U of L will play six of its first seven games at home in Freedom Hall, beginning with the Minardi Classic, an event named in memory of Pitino's brother-in-law who died in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

The Cardinals will play either South Alabama -- which posted a 26-7 record, won the Sun Belt Conference East Division title and reached the NCAA Tournament last season -- or Florida A&M (15-17 in `07-08) on Nov. 23 in the event.
