LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville men's basketball head coach Rick Pitino met with members of the media on Friday at the Yum! Center to preview Sunday's game against Marquette. The No. 6 Cardinals and No. 8 Golden Eagles will tip off at 12:06 p.m. ET at Freedom Hall in front of a nationally televised audience on CBS.
Louisville will return home for the first of two straight games. U of L won its fourth straight and 14th in the last 16 games as the Cardinals won 76-58 at Georgetown on Monday. The Cards put four players in double figures and were led by junior Earl Clark who scored a game-high 22 points while pulling down eight rebounds. As a team, U of L finished the game shooting 54.5 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from beyond the arc. Clark is averaging a team-best 13.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Senior Terrence Williams leads the Cardinals with 4.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
Marquette (23-5, 12-3 BIG EAST), ranked 8th by AP and 10th in the ESPN/USA Today Poll (Feb. 23), has won 15 of its last 18 games, including a 12-game win streak which was halted at USF on Feb. 6. The Golden Eagles fell 93-82 to No. 2 Connecticut on Wednesday as Jerel McNeal and Wesley Matthews scored 26 and 20 points, respectively. Senior guard Dominic James, who is second in career assists at Marquette and is No. 3 in career scoring, broke his foot in the game and is out for the season. He was averaging 11.4 points and a team-high 5.1 assists. McNeal, Marquette's all-time leader in scoring and steals, leads the Golden Eagles in scoring (20.2 ppg), while Matthews, who has started 97 straight games, averages 18.8 points. Forward Lazar Hayward averages 15.9 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds.
"White Out" the Golden Eagles
U of L fans are encouraged to wear white to the nationally televised game against No. 8 ranked Marquette in an effort to "White Out" Freedom Hall. The Cards will also wear retro uniforms in the style from the Wes Unseld era of the late 1960's. Unseld is the Cards' only three-time All-American, earning that distinction in 1966-68.
