Senior second baseman Adam Duvall earned the individual title to lead the Black Squad to the overall team title of the University of Louisville baseball team's 2009 Omaha Challenge on Nov. 16-20.
The Omaha Challenge is a five-day test of physical and mental stamina where two captains are selected and teams are drafted to compete against one another in six individually scored events and three team-scored bonus events. The six individual events include a 2,100-yard shuttle run, a towel hang, a 100-meter swim, a pull-up test, the tire flip and an endurance medley, while the bonus events were the bike race, sand pit relay and tug o' war.
Led by Duvall, who was also the team captain, the Black Squad scored 7,115 points, while the Red Squad, led by captain and senior catcher Jeff Arnold, finished with 7,044 points overall.
Individually, Duvall finished with 567.5 points in the six events, while junior pitcher Neil Holland was second with 554.5 points. Senior first baseman Andrew Clark was third with 554 points and was followed by senior catcher Justin Haywood in fourth with 552 points and freshman first baseman Zak Wasserman in fifth with 547 points.
The five-day event began on Monday with the shuttle run and pull-up test. Wasserman led the way in the shuttle run with a time of 8 minutes, 17 seconds, while redshirt freshman pitcher Justin Amlung was second with a time of 8:18.00. In the pull-up test, Clark led the way with 32 pull-ups, while Arnold was second with 28.
On Tuesday, freshman outfielder Jarred Clarkson won the towel hang with a time of 2:03.35, while junior catcher J.J. Ethel was second with a time of 1:51.00. Wednesday's 100-meter swim was won by Holland with a time of 1:07.59, while Wasserman was second with a time of 1:12.53.
Thursday's tire flip was won by Clark with a time of 30.69 seconds with Duvall in second at 35.11, while Friday's endurance medley relay finale was won by Wasserman with a time of 1:24.59 with Duvall in second at 1:27.13.
Joining Duvall on the Black Squad was Tyler Boraz, Andrew Clark, Jarred Clarkson, Brian Feekin, Drew Fitzpatrick, Andy Flett, Kyle Grieshaber, Dean Kiekhefer, Matt Lea, Mike Nastold, Bob Revesz, Josh Richmond, Thomas Royse, Cade Stallings, Joe Stilphen, Ryan Wright and Phil Wunderlich.
Joining Arnold on the Red Squad was Asaad Ali, Justin Amlung, J.J. Ethel, Mark Grieshaber, Drew Haynes, Justin Haywood, Nate Holland, Neil Holland, Stewart Ijames, Matt Koch, Keith Landers, Tyler Mathis, Curtis McCombs, Mike Morrison, Derek Self, Gabriel Shaw, Zak Wasserman and Tony Zych.
The Cardinals will open the 2010 season with a three-game series at home against Bowling Green on Feb. 19-21 at Jim Patterson Stadium.
