Xan's Zephyrs Even Pizza Bowl Series with 2-0 Win
Oct. 21, 2009
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman right-handed pitcher Andy Flett pitched five scoreless innings on the mound and the offense did just enough as Xan's Zephyrs earned a 2-0 win over Swiss Cheese's in game two of the 2009 Pizza Bowl series on Wednesday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium. With the win, the fourth annual Pizza Bowl intra-squad series is tied at 1-1 with the decisive third game set for Thursday at 2:30 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium. Flett, from Fenton, Mo., gave up just three hits and did not allow a baserunner past second base to earn the shutout victory. Junior Neil Holland pitched two scoreless innings allowing just one hit with four strikeouts to earn the save for the Zephyrs. On the other side, freshman Matt Koch was saddled with the tough loss for the Swiss after the Cherokee, Iowa, native allowed one unearned run on only one hit with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Junior Drew Haynes earned a two-out walk off Koch in the second inning, advanced to second with a stolen base and then scored on a throwing error by senior Adam Duvall for the lone run off Koch. The pitchers dominated throughout on Wednesday and the margin remained at one run into the seventh inning when senior Jeff Arnold closed out a two-hit day with an RBI single to right center off junior righty Tyler Mathis to score sophomore Ryan Wright from second base for the final 2-0 score. Holland closed out the game for the Zephyrs with a 1-2-3 final inning.
At the plate, freshman Mike Morrison had a hit for the Zephyrs, while junior college transfer J.J. Ethel had two hits and seniors Andrew Clark and Justin Haywood each had a hit for the Swiss. |
