Swiss Cheese's Earn 5-4 Win in Pizza Bowl Opener
Oct. 20, 2009 LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Kyle Grieshaber had two hits, two RBI and scored the game-winning run on an RBI sacrifice fly by senior Adam Duvall to lead the Swiss Cheese's to a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Xan's Zephyrs in game one of the 2009 Pizza Bowl series on Tuesday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium. Game two of the fourth annual Pizza Bowl intra-squad series is set for Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium, while the series finale will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. The series serves as the final scrimmages and officially ends the Cards' fall workouts. With the game tied at 4-4, Duvall's deep fly ball to right field scored Grieshaber from third to cap a two-run sixth inning for the Swiss Cheese's and complete the comeback from an early 4-0 deficit. Grieshaber finished 2-for-6 overall with the two RBI and two runs scored, while Duvall was 2-for-5 with one RBI. Senior first baseman Andrew Clark also added two hits and a run scored for the Swiss, junior catcher J.J. Ethel had a hit and two RBI and freshmen Jarred Clarkson and Drew Fitzpatrick each a hit and a run scored in the win. On the mound, sophomore Derek Self earned the win after allowing three earned runs on five hits in 5.0 innings as the Swiss starter, while junior Bob Revesz earned the save after pitching a scoreless final inning. Sophomore Joe Stilphen was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings of work out of the bullpen, while sophomore Tony Zych got the no-decision after allowing three runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings as the Zephyrs' starter.
The game opened with a bang for the Zephyrs as redshirt-sophomore Stewart Ijames and senior catcher Jeff Arnold hit back-to-back home runs off Self for a 3-0 lead in the first. After reaching base on an infield error, sophomore Ryan Wright scored on Ijames' home run to right field for the first two runs, while Arnold connected for a long ball over the wall in left center for the early three-run lead. After a pair of scoreless innings, the Zephyrs added to their lead in the fourth as freshman Mike Morrison led off the inning with a single to left and then scored on a one-out, RBI double to left field by junior Drew Haynes for the 4-0 advantage. The Swiss started their comeback in the fifth with three runs on four hits and one Zephyr error. Clark started the inning with a double down the right field line. After Clarkson was hit by a pitch from Stilphen, he moved to third and Clark scored from second on an RBI single by Grieshaber to cut the deficit to 4-1. Ethel then followed with a two-run single to right field to score Clarkson and Grieshaber to cut the Zephyrs' lead to 4-3 after five innings. The final two runs for the Swiss comeback came in the sixth as Fitzpatrick led off the inning with a walk, moved to second with a stolen base and then scored on an RBI single to left center by Grieshaber to tie the score at 4-4. Grieshaber advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ethel and then scored the game-winner on the fly ball from Duvall. At the plate for the Zephyrs, Arnold was 3-for-4 on the day with the home run, while Ijames was 1-for-4 with the two RBI. |
