OTTAWA, Ont. - Former University of Louisville right-handed pitcher Trystan Magnuson is among the 24 players selected to represent Canada at the 2009 International Baseball Federation (IBAF) Baseball World Cup in Europe from Sept. 9-27. The 2009 edition will be the 38th installment of the IBAF Baseball World Cup.

"I'm excited for Trystan and very proud of him because his hard work and commitment has returned a lot of success at the professional level in a short time span," said Louisville head coach Dan McDonnell. "He had a terrific career at the University of Louisville, where he won NCAA Regional and Super Regional titles, was a key contributor to this program's first ever College World Series appearance and earned his degree. He's had a great summer playing in the Blue Jays' organization and I'm excited about what the future holds for him, not only in professional baseball, but in life."

Magnuson, who played for the Cards from 2004-07, was an All-BIG EAST Third Team selection in 2007. He holds Louisville's single season record for pitching appearances with 37 in 2007 and is tied with B.J. Rosenberg, who will represent Team USA at the 2009 IBAF Baseball World Cup, for fourth in single season saves with nine in 2007. He is also fourth in career ERA at Louisville at 3.24, sixth in career saves with 10 and eighth in career appearances on the mound with 72.

Last month, Magnuson got the call to leave the Toronto Blue Jays' Class A club, the Dunedin Blue Jays, for the AA New Hampshire Fisher Cats of the Eastern League. Born in Vancouver, Canada and raised in Louisville, Magnuson has not allowed a run in 8.0 innings of work with six strikeouts and a 1-0 record since joining New Hampshire in mid-August. Before his move to AA, Magnuson was 4-1 with one save, 45 strikeouts and a 2.77 ERA in 61.2 innings of work for Dunedin in the Florida State League.

About the IBAF World Cup

The top-eight teams from the quarterfinals advance to the third round, which will be held exclusively in Italy, where they will be split into two pools and advance to the finals based on best pool-play record. The U.S. will kick off World Cup play on Sept. 10 in Regensburg, Germany in Pool E and will be joined by China, Germany and Venezuela. In addition to Regensburg, the World Cup will also feature first round pool play in Barcelona; Prague; Sundbyburg, Sweden; and Zagreb, Croatia.
