Clark Returns for Senior Season; Draftees Ali, Koch, Feekin and Wasserman Arrive at Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville baseball head coach Dan McDonnell announced Monday that first baseman Andrew Clark has elected to return for his senior season, while Cardinals' signees Asaad Ali, Matthew Koch, Brian Feekin and Zak Wasserman will also attend Louisville after all five players were selected in the 2009 MLB Draft in June. Clark, a 6-3, 220-pound native of New Palestine, Ind., was taken in the 31st round as the 950th selection overall by the Chicago Cubs. As a junior in 2009, he was second on the team in hitting with a .350 average to go along with nine home runs and 55 RBI while starting 64 of the Cardinals' 65 games at first base. A Second Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2009, Clark also earned the Jack Kaiser Award as the Most Outstanding Player of the BIG EAST Championship after hitting .500 with eight RBI and six runs scored in five games to lead the Cardinals' to their second straight tournament title. Wasserman, a 6-6, 225-pound first baseman, was selected in the 21st round as the 627th selection overall by the San Francisco Giants after completing his senior season for Lake Shore High School in Mich. Koch, a 6-3, 185-pound right-handed pitcher, was taken in the 37th round of the Draft as the 1128th selection by the Boston Red Sox after finishing his senior season at Washington High School in Iowa. Ali, a 5-10, 224-pound catcher, was drafted in the 40th round as the 1221st selection overall by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim after closing his senior season at Niles High School in Mich. Feekin, 6-6, 224-pound left-handed pitcher, was taken in the 44th round as the 1337th selection by the Philadelphia Phillies after completing his second season at Iowa Western Community College. All four newcomers have enrolled at U of L and will join the Cardinals' for the 2010 season. Ali, Koch and Wasserman will each have four year's of eligibility for the Cards, while Feekin will have two years of collegiate eligibility remaining at Louisville.
The Cardinals closed out their 2009 season on Saturday with an NCAA Super Regional loss at No. 2 Cal State Fullerton. Louisville finished with a 47-18 record overall after sweeping the BIG EAST Conference regular season and tournament titles. U of L advanced to its second Super Regional in three years after earning a 5-3 win over Vanderbilt in the title game of the NCAA Regional at Jim Patterson Stadium, the first ever NCAA Baseball Regional in Louisville. |
