LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville senior shortstop John Dao connected on a two-out, two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning to lead the Black squad to an 8-7 win at Friday's Black-Red Scrimmage at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Dao's only hit of the day came off freshman righty Tony Zych to score Nate Holland and Jeff Arnold and give the Black team its first lead of the day at 8-6. The triple also completed a five-run seventh for the Black team, which included a mammoth two-run homer by junior third baseman Chris Dominguez to open the scoring.
"It was great for our guys to be in the game-uniforms and play in front of the home fans," said Cards' head coach Dan McDonnell. "This is as close as we can get to a real game. We had a good crowd and a good atmosphere, and that's what we wanted. We've still got two more scrimmages this weekend and a lot of things to work on before next week's opener at Florida, but it's definitely a good start to the weekend."
The Red team entered the seventh and final inning of play with a 6-3 lead and after Zych opened his first inning of work with a pair of outs, junior first baseman Andrew Clark started the rally with a single to setup the Dominguez home run to left.
With the Red lead trimmed to 6-5, leftfielder Phil Wunderlich was hit by a pitch and Arnold followed with a single. A single to right field by Holland scored Wunderlich to tie the game at 6-6 and set the stage for Dao's game-winning triple.
Zych took the loss giving up five runs on five hits in one inning, while senior lefty
Gavin Logsdon got the win with his two innings of action. Sophomore Thomas gave up one run, a
Josh Richmond home run, in the seventh inning to earn the save.
Arnold led the winning Black squad with a 3-for-5 day from the plate and one RBI, while Dominguez and Holland had two hits each. Richmond finished the day 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Red squad, while freshman Ryan Wright was 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. Alec Lowrey added a pair of hits, including a first-inning home run and three RBI for the Red team.
The Cards will scrimmage again on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET, and will close the weekend with a third scrimmage on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET, and both scrimmages are open to the public.
Following Friday's scrimmage, McDonnell also announced sophomore outfielder Stewart Ijames will miss the 2009 season with an injured rotator cuff in his right (throwing) shoulder, which he suffered during preseason drills. A native of Owensboro, Ky., Ijames will redshirt in 2009 and will have three years of eligibility remaining in a Cardinal uniform.
Ijames earned Freshman All-America honors from College Baseball and Ping!Baseball and was a Third Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2008. In his first collegiate season, he hit .351 with eight home runs and 39 RBI and scored 39 runs. He started 44 games, including 38 games in right field, and played in 54 games total. He also hit .386 with five home runs and had a slugging percentage of .686 in 23 conference games.
