Cardinal Nine Welcomes Record Crowd In Patterson Opener

LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Louisville baseball team set a school attendance record as 3,213 fans poured into Jim Patterson Stadium in its inaugural game to see the Cards fall short 4-1 to East Carolina. Pirate(19-13, 5-8) starter Ricky Brooks (3-2) stole the spotlight, scattering nine hits and allowing one run in a complete game win. All of the runs came in the fourth inning, as Drew Costanzo's RBI single scored Adam Witter, and later in the inning Brett Lindgren's bases-clearing double put ECU up 4-0. J.T. LaFountain opened the bottom of the inning with a double own the left field line and eventually scored on a double to the same spot by Logan Johnson for the Cardinals' only run. Louisville(17-13, 7-5) starter B.J. Rosenberg (3-2) took the loss, allowing the four runs on seven hits and two walks, while fanning six in 8.1 innings. Griffin Bailey retired the final two batters of the game for U of L. LaFountain, Johnson and Jorge Castillo each had two hits for Louisville. LaFountain's single in the first was not only the first hit in Jim Patterson Stadium history, but the 200th hit of his Cardinal career, ranking him 10th on the career list at Louisville. The same two teams will again meet for game two of the series at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Patterson Stadium on the corner of Third and Central. Admission is free and radio broadcast can be heard in Louisville on WAVG 1450 AM.
