Dominguez, Holland and Rosenberg Guide No. 22 Cards to 9-2 Win Sunday
March 2, 2008
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Sophomore Chris Dominguez belted two home runs and a double, driving in four runs to lead the 22nd-ranked University of Louisville to a 9-2 win over North Carolina A & T Sunday in the inaugural Charleston Firefighter Memorial Challenge. Freshman Nate Holland added a 3 for 3 effort, belting a two-run home run in his collegiate debut, and senior starter B.J. Rosenberg tossed six strong innings to earn the win. The Cardinals (4-2) picked up back-to-back singles to open the game but could not cash in. Holland singled to right in his first collegiate at bat, but he was thrown out at third, trying to take the extra bag on a single to right by fellow freshman Phil Wunderlich. In the Cardinal second, freshman Josh Richmond belted a one out double and scored on a single by Tyler Mickits for a 1-0 lead. Mickits advanced to second on the throw to the plate and subsequently scored on a double to the gap in right center by Derrick Alfonso to make it 2-0. An out later, Holland smoked his first career home run to right center to expand the Cardinal lead to 4-0. In the top of the fourth Rosenberg got into a little trouble with consecutive walks to open the inning. He then appeared to wriggle out of the jam with a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play, but Joe McIntyre's RBI single cut the Cardinal lead to 4-1. Dominguez, 2008 Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year, responded by hammering a solo home run into the wind in left center to lead off the Cardinal fifth. Two outs later, Richmond walked and moved to second on a passed ball before Mickits second RBI single of the game, made it 6-1 Cards.
Holland drew a one-out walk in the sixth and scored on an RBI double by Dominguez for a 7-1 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Wunderlich walked, and Dominguez unloaded to center for his second home run of the game and the season to give the Cards a 9-1 lead. Nick Rogers plated a meaningless run with an RBI single in the ninth for the Aggies (3-5) to determine the final margin. Rosenberg (1-1) allowed one run on just four hits and three walks, striking out eight. He is now tied for first with Brian Bentley('97-'00) in career starts with 44. Freshman Thomas Royse allowed a hit in the seventh, striking out one, and was followed by freshman Bob Revesz in his Cardinal debut, who retired the side in order easily in the eighth. Transfer Matt Lea worked the ninth and surrendered a run on two hits, striking out one. Dominguez finished the day going 3 for 5 at the plate with two home runs and a double, driving in four to pace the 15-hit attack. Holland was 3 for 3 with two RBI, adding a stolen base in his first game as a Cardinal. Mickits, Wunderlich, Clark and Alfonso each added two hits. Aggie starter Donald Howerton (1-1) took the loss, surrendering six runs on 10 hits and two walks, he struck out six in five innings. The Cardinals now travel to Nashville where they will play nationally ranked Vanderbilt Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. ET, before returning home to Jim Patterson Stadium on Wednesday against EKU at 3:00 p.m. for the first of 13 straight in the Ville. |
