2011: Hit .209 with six RBI and four stolen bases in five attempts in 42 appearances as a position player, including 28 starts. Was 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in nine relief appearances on the mound. Finished with a hit, an RBI and a run scored as the Cards' leadoff hitter in the win over Morehead State on March 1. Also made collegiate pitching debut with a 0.1-inning relief appearance against Eagles. Made first career start against Toledo on Feb. 27 going 1-for-3 with a run scored as the Cardinals' leftfielder. Appeared in all three of the Cardinals' games at the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge. Had an RBI single in the season-opening win over Michigan.
High School: Sturgeon was a two-time All-State selection, two-time Region Player of the Year, four-time Academic All-State and two-time All "A" State Tournament MVP during his prep career at Owensboro Catholic High School, where he was coached by Allen Cox. As a senior, he earned First Team All-State honors after hitting .425 with two home runs, 20 RBI, 14 doubles, 20 stolen bases and 26 runs scored at the plate while finishing with a 6-1 record on the mound with a 0.92 ERA, two saves and 92 strikeouts. He hit .390 with 23 stolen bases and 25 runs scored as a junior and finished 8-3 on the mound with a 0.87 ERA and 97 strikeouts. As a sophomore, he hit .372 with 22 stolen bases and 21 runs scored, while on the mound, he was 7-2 with a 0.48 ERA and 90 strikeouts. He participated in the 2009 World Wood Bat Association 17U National Championship event. He also earned four letters in basketball and two letters in football at Owensboro Catholic.
Personal: Born Cole Michael Sturgeon on Sept. 17, 1991, in Owensboro, Ky. Son of Mike and Cyndi Sturgeon. Majoring in business finance at the University of Louisville. After college, he plans to work in the front office for a professional sports team. Person with the greatest influence on his athletic career is his dad, who has been there for him through the best and worst times. Hobbies and outside interests include history. Favorite movies are 300 and Step Brothers. Enjoys watching Criminal Minds and Baseball Tonight. Favorite athletes are David Ortiz and Chipper Jones. Favorite food is mac `n' cheese. Enjoys eating at Buffalo Wild Wings. Favorite teams are the Boston Red Sox and the Buccaneers. If he could eat dinner with three other people he would choose Charles Barkley, John Wooden and Michael Jordan. Something not many people know about Cole is that he became Catholic when he was 16. His father Mike played baseball at Louisiana-Lafayette.
