Before U of L: Played two seasons at Seminole State Community College (Okla.) where he was a Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference Gold Glove winner. In 2011, he hit .345 with three home runs, 38 RBI, 16 stolen bases, 13 doubles and four triples for Seminole's OCAC championship squad. In his first season at Seminole State in 2010, he hit .357 with five stolen bases.
High School: Was a four-year letterwinner at Eufaula High School, where he was coached by his father Stacey Helms. Earned All-State honors and was named the Green County Player of the Year at Eufaula while advancing to the state semifinals twice in his career at Eufaula. Also earned four letters in football and was an All-State selection on the gridiron while playing both strong safety and wide receiver. Was a four-year letterwinner in basketball as a forward and was a two-time All-Conference selection.
Personal: Born Matthew Garrett Helms on June 16, 1991 in McAlester, Okla. Son of Stacey and Christy Helms. Has one sister, Brooke. Majoring in sport administration at the University of Louisville. After college, he wants to continue playing baseball professionally or become an underwater photographer/videographer. Person with the greatest influence on his career was his dad, who taught him everything he knows and led him to love the game. Hobbies and outside interests include wakeboarding, hunting, photography and riding four-wheelers. Favorite movies are Inception, Finding Nemo, Shutter Island, For the Love of the Game and Field of Dreams. Enjoys watching ESPN and History Channel. Favorite cereals are Golden Crisp and Cocoa Puffs. Favorite candy bars are Snickers and Reese's. Favorite team is the Atlanta Braves. Favorite restaurant is Quiznos. Enjoys listening to country music. Something many people may not know about him is that he is a certified scuba diver. His father Stacey played two seasons of baseball at Seminole State and two seasons at Oral Roberts University.
