High School: Played four seasons of baseball as a pitcher and first baseman for coach Mike Zunica at St. Rita High School. Ranked as one of the top 250 players in the nation in the class of 2011 by Perfect Game USA. Earned All-State, All-Conference, All-Area and All-Region honors at St. Rita, which earned back-to-back state runner-up finishes in 2009 and 2010. On the mound, was 7-2 with four saves, a 2.10 ERA and 70 strikeouts, while as a position player, hit .475 with 14 home runs, 70 RBI, 16 doubles and 10 stolen bases. Injuries limited his production as a prep senior. Also earned four letters in football as a defensive lineman. Attended same high school as former Cardinal pitcher Tony Zych.
Personal: Born Joseph Dominic Filomeno on Dec. 31, 1992 in Joliet, Ill. Son of John and Cherise Filomeno. Has three siblings, Ashley, Regina and Nick. Majoring in exercise science at U of L. Biggest thrill in sports was getting the win in relief against the No. 1 team in the state in front of more than 3,500 fans as a sophomore. Person with the greatest influence on his athletic career was his father, who has taught him everything he knows and sacrificed so much for him to play. After college, he wants to play professional baseball and if that does not work out, he wants to be a college strength coach. Hobbies and outside interests include fishing and golf. Favorite movie is Bull Durham. Favorite TV show is SportsCenter. Favorite athlete is Billy Wagner. Favorite cereal is Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Favorite candy bar is Butterfinger. Favorite food is lasagna. Favorite teams are the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. Enjoys listening to hip hop and country music. If he could have dinner with three people, he would invite his father, his grandfather and his great grandfather.
