Summer 2011: Playing for the Florence RedWolves, he earned Coastal Plain League All-Star honors while hitting .283 with two home runs, 26 RBI, 28 runs scored and 19 stolen bases in 25 attempts in 39 games played.
2011: Hit .250 with 16 stolen bases in 23 attempts and nine RBI while making 38 starts and playing in 53 games. Finished with a .392 batting average and 10 stolen bases in 19 games in May. Had at least one hit in each of the Cards' final four games of the BIG EAST Championship. Was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in tournament win over St. John's. Went 2-for-2 with four runs scored and an RBI in elimination game over Pittsburgh. Finished 2-for-3 with an RBI in tournament victory over Cincinnati. Had career best four hits and a run scored in May 17 win at Indiana. On the same day his five-game hitting streak was halted in game one of a doubleheader, he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored as Louisville won game two at No. 15 Connecticut on May 14. Took his career-best hitting streak to five with a 2-for-4 performance and one RBI against Huskies on May 13. Extended hitting streak with single against Vanderbilt. Had at least one hit in each of Cardinals' three games at Seton Hall. Finished with career-high three hits on May 5 against Pirates. Went 2-for-3 with a run scored against Eastern Michigan on May 3. Was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in Cards' May 1 win over Georgetown. Also scored two runs in April 30 victory over Hoyas. Had a hit and scored twice in the Cardinals' March 26 win at Rutgers. Was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI on March 18 against Xavier. Had career best two hits in 2-for-4 day at the plate against Toledo on Feb. 25. Started collegiate career as the Cardinals' leadoff hitter and centerfielder. Had an RBI sacrifice fly in win over Michigan, first career hit against Ohio State and scored first run against Minnesota at the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge. Made a terrific throw home from center field for the final out of the first inning in the Cards' win over Minnesota.
High School: Engel was a three-time All-Conference selection for Loveland High School and head coach Ken Reed. As a senior, Engel hit .537 with 34 RBI and 25 stolen bases. As a junior, he hit .520 with a school record 16 doubles, 24 RBI, 24 runs scored and 13 stolen bases, while he hit .458 with 19 RBI and 20 runs scored as a sophomore. He participated in the 2008 World Wood Bat Association 17U National Championship and he played summer baseball for the Midland Redskins. He earned three letters in football and became the first Loveland player to earn Fort Ancient Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors as a senior quarterback earlier this fall. He also earned one letter and was an All-Conference selection in basketball.
