2003: Tossed a solid inning of relief in win over Tulane (5/11), inducing a double play and a groundout, holding the Cardinal lead. Picked up his first career save, striking out four and allowing just one hit in three strong innings against IPFW. Logged scoreless innings of relief against Evansville(4/2), Illinois(3/7) and Butler(2/28) and at Western(3/25). Made AD and C-USA Honor Roll.
2002: Did not play.
2001: Was 2-2 with a 7.38 ERA for the Northern Illinois Huskies as a sophomore, starting eight games an appearing in 12. Twirled six scoreless innings of two-hit ball, walking three and striking out nine, the third highest total in school history in a win over Mount St. Clare(4/10). Pitched 42.2 innings. Tossed seven innings in a 3-2 10-inning win against 14th ranked Stetson, in which he allowed two runs, one earned on six hits and four walks while fanning five but not figuring into the decision.
2000: Earned no decisions in his initial college campaign covering 11.2 innings with an 8.49 ERA in eight appearances, two of which were starts.
High School: Was a four-year letterwinner for the Lake Park High School Lancers baseball team, while lettering three times in football. Played first and oufield in addition to pitching. Won nine games with a 1.96 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 57 innings of work. Tied the school record with 13 strikeouts in a single game.
Personal: Born 12/26/80 to Terry and Carole Ayers in Chicago. Major is finance at U of L. Has one older sister. Enjoys listening to Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer and Pat McGhee Band. Favorite teams are the Cubs and Bears, favorite athletes are Nolan Ryan and Roger Clemens. Would like to dine with his two grandfathers, whom he never met and his father, "Mom and I would get lunch the next day." His first loss in college came in a game(3/23/02) in which he faced Bryan Bullington of Ball State, who went on to be the #1 overall pick in the 2002 draft in the MLB draft. Biggest thrill was a seven-inning effort against #8 Stetson in 2001, allowing one run and striking out six. His dad played baseball at Western Michigan and is his greatest influence on his athletic career. Enjoys playing the guitar in his spare time.
