Cards Win 13 Titles, Set Five School Records at Cardinal Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In its first home meet of the 2006 season, the University of Louisville track and field team won 13 event titles, set five school records and added four more NCAA regional qualifying marks at Saturday's Cardinal Invitational at Cardinal Park Track Stadium. Leading the way for the Cards were jumpers Kelley Bowman and Tony Belt. Bowman, a senior from Mt. Vernon, Ky., won the high jump with a school record and NCAA regional qualifying mark of 5 feet, 11 inches. The jump shattered her previous school record mark of 5-08.75 set on three previous occasions. Belt, a freshman from Berkeley Springs, W.Va., won the high jump (7-02.50) and long jump (24-02.50) titles and improved his season record to 9-1 in the jumps events (4-1 in high jump, 4-0 in long jump, 1-0 in triple jump). With the four new NCAA regional qualifying marks on Saturday, the Cards now have a school record 16 qualifiers for the NCAA Mideast Regional on May 26-27 in Knoxville, Tenn., an impressive improvement from just one regional qualifier in 2005. Junior Emily Turland led the way for the Cards qualifying in a second event after her first-place and school record mark of 158-11 in the discus. The native of New Albany, Ind., has also earned the qualifying standard in the hammer throw for the NCAA regional. Senior Jennifer Hartig of Alexandria, Ky., earned an NCAA regional qualifying spot in the pole vault for the second time in her career with a second-place mark of 12-05.50 on Saturday, while Robert Amedee and Brad Keys each earned their first NCAA regional marks for the Cardinal men. Amedee, a junior from Slidell, La., won the 100-meter dash with a school record time of 10.47 seconds, while Keys, a sophomore from South Charleston, W.Va., won the 400-meter hurdles with qualifying mark of 52.37 seconds.
"I'm excited about what I saw today because it was a great day of track and field at Cardinal Park," said U of L head coach Ron Mann. "It was a great day for Kelley Bowman with a new school record and a great performance in the high hump. And with the four NCAA regional qualifiers today and a total of 16 on the season, we've exceeded our early season goal of 14 with four weeks left until the NCAA regional." The Cards added two more school records as junior LaShondra Durias won the women's 100-meter dash with a U of L record time of 11.84 seconds breaking the previous mark of 11.96 set in 2001 by Alanna Mestelle, while junior Wesley Korir won the 1,500-meter run with a school record time of 3:49.52 breaking the previous school record of 3:52.03 set by Jeff Beyst in 1992. U of L also added first-place finishes in the triple jump as freshman Andre Black won his second title of the season in the event with a mark of 51-07.25, while Durias added a second title on the day with a win in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.90 seconds. Turland also added a second title on the day winning the hammer with a mark of 189-06, while freshman Heather Trimiew won her second 400-meter hurdles title of the season with a time of 59.66 seconds. The final title of the day for the Cards came in the women's 4x100-meter relay as Aajah Showell teamed with Trimiew, Bowman and Durias for a first-place time of 47.37 seconds. The meet, which included athletes from Ohio State, Purdue, Missouri, DePaul, Butler, Xavier, Dayton and Indianapolis, was run in conjunction with Male High School's Bulldog Classic.
