SOUTH BEND, Ind. - University of Louisville junior Wesley Korir recorded the fastest 5,000-meter time in the nation in 2007 to lead the No. 12 ranked men's track and field team on the first day of competition Friday at the Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame. Overall, the Cards earned two new NCAA qualifying marks and set two school records on the day.

Korir, a native of Eldoret, Kenya, was the top finishing collegiate runner and second-place overall in the event with school record and NCAA qualifying time of 13 minutes, 52.63 seconds in the 5,000m. His time was nearly six seconds faster than the top time in the nation entering the weekend of 13:58.09 set by Oregon's Galen Rupp more than a month ago and also shattered Korir's own previous school record of 14:21.30 set last season at the Meyo Invitational.

Joining Korir with strong performances for the Cardinal men's team on Friday evening was freshman Shaquan Brown in and sophomore Rudon Bastian. Brown, a native of Paterson, N.J., won the 500m with a school record time of 1:02.60, breaking the previous school record of 1:03.52 set by Audley Gordon in 1987. Bastian, a native of Nassau, Bahamas, and a transfer from Paul Quinn College, finished second in the long jump with an NCAA qualifying mark of 24 feet, 9.25 inches.

On the women's side, the Cards were led by senior Emily Turland with a strong second-place finish in the weight throw with an NCAA qualifying mark of 62-04.00.

Overall, the Cardinal men's and women's teams now have a combined nine NCAA provisional qualifiers, including six by the men and three for the women.

The second and final day of competition at Notre Dame will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET on Saturday. Following this weekend's meet, the Cardinals will have a limited number of athletes competing at the University of Arkansas' Tyson Invitational on Feb. 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark., site of the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships.
