Damien Kalvar is in his fifth year as throws coach at U of L and third coordinating the throwing events for the men's team. He provided volunteer services the first two years in his specialties, the hammer and weight throws, and continues in that capacity with the women's team. Kalvar, who graduated from the U of L School of Business in 1995, was one of the program's most successful all-time throwers and is the only track & field athlete to ever earn MVP honors four straight years. He was a three-time NCAA Provisional qualifier in the hammer and earned that status a fourth time indoors in the weight throw. A two-time Metro Conference Champion, he finished among the conference's top-two a record number six times. In his final season, Kalvar's best hammer effort ranked him among the top-35 throwers in the country. He still holds the school record in the hammer throw and the indoor 35lb. weight throw. An accomplished athlete himself, he continues to refine his knowledge by staying involved in open competitions in both the hammer and weight throws. Noted for his thorough technical understanding of the throwing events, he also demonstrates an extraordinary teaching ability. Kalvar's most recent athletes have achieved success at both the conference and national levels. He has coached multiple all-conference performers, Conference USA champions and conference record holders in both the hammer and weight throw, plus a two-time NCAA Provisional qualifier in the weight throw. The 2001 throws group was easily the top producer in the program with five different athletes scoring in nine places at the conference championships, including a conference champion in the women's hammer, a runner-up in the men's discus and an NCAA Provisional qualifier in the women's 20lb. weight throw. Kalvar, who holds the team's all-time squat powerlift record at 715 lbs., has blended his successful teaching skills with a significant appreciation for strength and total power development and continues to be active and involved with the throw athletes in that aspect of their personal development.
