U of L All-American swimmer Vali Preda helped his countrymen set a new national record at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 4X100 Medley Relay.

Preda swam the breaststroke leg in the event, going 1:01.41 in a heat that included Japanese breaststroke gold medalist Kosuke Kitajima. Razvan Florea led off for the Romanians in the backstroke, Preda manned the breaststroke led followed by Alabama grad Stefan Gherghel in the fly and anchored by Norbert Trandafir. The foursome finished fifth in their heat and 13th overall.

It is the final event for Preda in Beijing, who will return to Louisville for his senior year.

"A great way to conclude our successful week in Beijing," said U of L coach Arthur Albiero, who is on the Romanian coaching staff.
