Results
The University of Louisville men's swimming and diving team won the 2009 Purdue Invitational with four wins in the final day of competition. The U of L women were second, trailing only Michigan.
U of L men were first (938.5), followed by Ohio State (932.5) Purdue (792.5), Missouri State (320.5) and Michigan (24). The women were second (739.5) to Michigan (774.5), but finished ahead of Arkansas (680), Purdue (535), Ohio State (446), and Missouri State (134).
"We performed well tonight, especially well considering how early point of the season," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. "I am proud of the way we fought as a team all weekend. We have much to work yet to do, but the weekend was a good championship style experience for our team.
For the men, Brendon Andrews won the the 100-free with a time of 44.54 in a 1-2-3 sweep of the event. Kris Findorff was second in 45.19 and Carlos Van Isschot was third in 45.26. Chase Grimes added points with an eighth in the A-final in 46.32. For the women, Whitney Campbell was the top finisher for the Cardinals with a fourth (50.99), Liz Halet was sixth in 50.47 and Sarah Andrews was seventh in 50.49, all in the A-final.
Carlos Almeida won the 200-breast with a time of 1:58.96, Sergiu Daghid posted a time of 2:02.62 and Michael Haefner put up a time of 2:04.42 all in the A-final. For the women in the 200-breast, Therese Bergstrom was second in 2:12.99, with Fanny Lilliestrom (2:16.18), Heather Holtom (2:16.43) and Leslie VanWinkle (2:16.67) hot in her wake.
Pedro Oliveira was first in the 200-fly with a time of 1:47.38, teammate
Rafal Kuchta was second in 1:50.45 and
Riley Martin was fourth and
Michael Pryor went 1:51.79 for sixth.
The men's 400-free relay won when Brendon Andrews, Kris Findorff, Carlos Almeida and Carlos Van Isschot turned in a time of 2:57.58. The women's relay team of Leslie VanWinkle, Sarah Andrews, Lacey Bobo and Liz Halet combined to post a time of 3:22.64.
