Three Records Fall in First Day Of Hoosierland Swim Invite
Nov. 21, 2008 The University of Louisville Cardinal swimming and diving team had four first places and set three school records in the first day of the five-school field in the Indiana Hoosierland Invitational Friday night in Bloomington. "It was a good first day with a number of outstanding swims, said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. "We like this championship format as it will serve us well going into the US Short Course Nationals." The women took first and second in the 200-free relay in the first final event of the evening. Whitney Campbell led off and set a school record in her leg with a time of 22.44, which also made an NCAA B-cut. She was followed by Nicole Landisch, Anna Dishuck with Liz Halet anchoring and the foursome put up the winning time of 1:31.04. Right behind them was the B-relay team of Lacey Bobo, Therese Bergstrom, Sarah Andrews and Aileen Cole, who were second in 1:34.73. The U of L men were second as Alex Sweet, Andrei Radzionau, Brendon Andrews and Adam Madarassy posted a time of 1:20.09. Anna Dishuck had a strong swim in the 200-IM with a second place, going 2:01.41. Therese Bergstrom scored with a third place in 2:03.87. Newcomer Fanny Lilliestrom was 8th. In the consols, Jenny Schimenti was third in her race tying with Abby Miller with a time of 2:06.80. For the men, Vali Preda was fifth in 1:53.08 with teammate Luke Wakefield finishing ninth.
In the 500-free, Amanda Henleben touched 7th in 4:56. 50. For the men in the same event, Shane Lichtenberg was third and Pedro Oliveira was fourth. In perhaps the marquis swim of the night, Whitney Campbell took the 50-free with the blazing time of 22.68. "I want to make a special mention of Whitney's swim," said Albiero. "She was flirting all last year with Olympic Trial times and just couldn't quite get there. Now she has made a big improvement and is working really hard." Nicole Landisch was second in 23.10. Liz Halet was fourth, going 23.50. Aileen Cole touched eighth and Lacey Bobo was 10th. For the men, Andrei Radzionau was first in the 50-free with a time of 19.88. Freshman Brendon Andrews was fifth, turned in a time of 20.33. Carlos Van Isschot was seventh in 20.61. The men won the 200-medley relay, as Carlos Van Isschot (48.69), Vali Preda (53.71), Adam Madarassy (48.05) and Andrei Radzionau (43.17) won with a time of 3:13.62. The women's foursome of Raine Thompson (57.81), Therese Bergstrom (1:01.72), Nicole Landisch (56.27) and Liz Halet (49.72) touched second in 3:45.52, setting a new school record. "That was a convincing win in the men's 200-medley relay. We were five seconds ahead of the next finisher," said Arthur Albiero. "The women swam great too and Therese's breaststroke leg was great. She was really moving. Relays are a huge part of college swimming and we have all the pieces of the puzzle to score well in the relays now." Preliminaries begin at 9 a.m. Saturday morning |
